This is one of the earliest works of Tafsir by a famous jurist and Muhaddith Imam Sufyan bin Saeed al-Thawri. Imam Tabari quotes many texts from this Tafsir. Imam Sufyan was not only a scholar but the founder of Sufism and one of the great Tabi'een. He was born in Kufa and died in 106 AH. His Usul al-Fiqh started a new school called Thawri, but this school of Fiqh did not survive long. Though his juridicial thought and especially hadith transmission are highly regarded in Sunnism, and have influenced all the major schools.
